Okay, so I think we can say it is now officially Summer here in NZ and along with Summer comes swimming, picnics, sunbathing and general outdoor leisure.
I've compiled a few of my top Summer essentials when it comes to keeping my skin protected, moisturised and looking it's best.
Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula: I try my best to apply a really moisturising body lotion every evening after being outside for the day to help my skin recover from the exposure to the sun. I love any body lotion or butter that contains cocoa butter, as it really helps to even out the tone of my skin as well as smooth out any dry patches.
Sun Sense Clear Mist: I love this sunscreen mist because it is super quick to apply (and reapply) due to the fact that you simply spray it onto your skin and you're done! While it does say "2 hours water resistant", make sure that you reapply after you've hopped out of the water and dried yourself off, to make sure that you don't get burnt.
Garnier Ambre Solaire Bronzer: I have super fair skin, so self tanning wasn't something I wasn't ever too keen about, mainly because all other self tanners I had tried, made me look like a Twistie (a Cheeto if you are American). I recently tried out this bronzing foam by Garnier and I can honestly say I love the results! It is build-able so you won't have any awkward "OMG this is sooo dark on me!" moments and it's foam texture ensures an even colour. I would still recommend using a tanning mitt however, when you use this, just to make sure that the tone is as even as possible and there are no visible edges. Plus, using a mitt means you won't get strangely tanned hands afterwards!
Blistex Ultra Lip Balm: I always have to make sure I am carrying a lip balm containing spf whenever I am out, because burnt lips hurt like mad! I love Blistex lip balms because they are super hydrating, and stay that way hours after applying. DON'T even think about using a lip gloss in place of a lip product with spf because it will only increase your chances of having your lips burnt off-(okay, so they won't really burn off, I just said that to add effect)
Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defence SPF 50: Even though most of the base make up that I wear contains spf already, I like to apply a moisturiser that contains spf underneath to really protect my skin and form a barrier against the harsh sun. I love that this product by Cetaphil doesn't have any added fragrance because I have pretty sensitive skin which can react easily to a lot of things. Out of all the spf moisturisers I have tried so far, this one definitely 'takes the cake'.
I'd love to know what your Summer Skin Essentials are in the comments below! I really do read and appreciate each of your comments..so, it'd be lovely if people actually did leave comments like they used to! So far I've had quite a few spam comments so I just want to reassure myself that actual people are still reading my blog and I'm not just rambling to no one! Haha! xx

Hi lovelies! You may remember in one of my previous posts I mentioned that there would be a giveaway sometime soon, and here it is! -One entry per person (if you enter more than once, I will delete the additional comments)
If you are under 16, please ask your parents before entering as I don't particularly want to have to deal with angry parents asking why this girl on the inter-web has their children's contact details!
Competition open to NZ residents only because it would cost me an arm and a leg to ship this internationally!
Entries close December 26 2013 5pm NZ time and the winner will be contacted by December 28. If, for some reason, I do not hear back from the winner within 48 hours (of sending the email announcing the winner), a new winner will be drawn. Winner will be drawn at random using Random.org. Check back here after the 26th to see who the winner is!
I don't wear lip stick as much in the Summer as I do in other seasons just because it's usually too hot, but when I do, I tend to pick brighter colours such as reds with more orange undertones and corals to reflect the lovely warmth of the Summer sun.
Here I have a few of my top Summer lip colour picks to share with you.
MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo: I love this colour for summer as it really stands out against my fair skin and generally brightens my complexion. This is perfect for both day and night wear, so there is no need to switch lip colour for an event you might have in the evening.
4ME Lip liner in #114 Orange: So, I bought this lip liner from my local $2 shop because I was in need of an orange lipliner to wear underneath MAC's Morange. I didn't have high expectations for this considering it cost about $1.20, so you can imagine my surprise when I applied it and found that it was SO pigmented and smooth! So much so, that I can even wear it on its own. I personally think that there is a misconception that cheap make up equals bad quality, but I really don't think that is the case. If you get the chance, give this brand a go.
MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger: A beautiful orange toned red, perfect for the day time. While this lipstick is a matte finish, I find it is much more hydrating than some of the other matte lipsticks I have, which makes it more comfortable to wear.
Rimmel Apocalips Lip Lacquer in #501 Stellar: I love the creamy consistency of this lip Lacquer as well as the bold coral colour. This colour is very versatile because you can change the overall look of the product by blotting. If a more sheer, stain is what you are going for, simply blot off the extra product onto a tissue a few times. If you are wanting a more bold and opaque look, then simply leave the product to dry a little before gently blotting.
I'd love to know what colours you are loving for Summer!
When I first watched 'The Shining', I fell in love with Shelley Duvall and her large, doe like eyes, and made a mental note to write up a post about her at some stage. Since then, I've researched her further and found some ultra groovy 60s/70s images of her with a wispy fringe and wearing huge, 'Twiggy' lashes, and figured that this particular style would be a cool one to write the post about....
Eyelure Naturalites Upper and Lower Lashes in Choppy Black: The super thin band on these lashes allows for more flexibility meaning that they will be able to fit different eye shapes with ease, thus being more comfortable to wear. These are the perfect lashes to achieve that 'Twiggy' inspired, 60s look.
Bourjois Java Rice Powder: The finely milled texture of this powder allows for light application and the flecks of shimmer throughout create a dewy and radiant appearance.
Sleek Pout Polish in Powder Pink: The lovely rosy colour of this pout polish helps to emphasise the roundness of the lips to create Shelley's signature look. If you want to further emphasise your lips, use your finger to dab a little highlighter (such as the shimmery colour from the Sleek contour kit) onto the cupids bow- the little dip in your upper lip.
Yes, I know what you're thinking, this is a beauty blog, why is this a recipe post? I figured that I may as well post the occasional recipe seeing as along with beauty and makeup, food and cooking is a huge passion of mine.
Today I decided to try out making brownies, but more specifically, raw brownies. If you're not familiar with raw baking, it is basically where you don't cook/bake the food in order to retain the nutrients. Raw baking is also vegan.
As it is Summer here in NZ, I felt like making something that didn't require turning on the oven. I used a recipe by The Rawtarian, however, I altered it to suit what we had available. These would make excellent Christmas presents, (just make sure they don't have a nut allergy before you give these to them!)
1 cup pecans
1 cup dates (pitted)
5 tablespoons raw cacao (cocoa) powder
4 tablespoons shredded unsweetened coconut
1/3 cup sliced almonds
2 tablespoons honey
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1. Place pecans and almonds in your food processor and process until they become small and crumbly. A bit like breadcrumbs.
2. Add dates to the pecans and process again until the mixture sticks together and the dates are well processed. The mixture will start to clump together.
3. Add the remaining ingredients to the pecans, almonds and dates and process again until the mixture turns a lovely dark chocolatey brown. Stop processing before it gets too buttery. (There should still be air between the small bits so that you will be able to roll them into balls).
4. With clean hands and a teaspoon, spoon out a little of the mixture into your hands and begin to press and roll the mixture into a little ball. Repeat with remaining mixture.
5. Refrigerate these brownie bites for a couple of hours. You do not have to refrigerate them, but they are much more solid when chilled.
6. Store this raw brownie recipe in the refrigerator if it lasts that long!
If you've read my previous post, you would be aware that last night I was invited to go to Lush's Christmas Beauty Blogger Event, where we were each very generously provided with a goodie bag consisting of the new Christmas stock. So here is a run down of the products in the goodie bags as well as two of my own purchases...
Noriko Soap:* A gentle, floral soap consisting of Japanese inspired ingredients such as Tofu, Sake and rice.
Snow Fairy Sparkle Massage Bar:* A Beautiful shimmery pink massage bar scented with the famous Snow fairy aroma, which begins to melt upon contact with the skin.
Snowman Bath Ballistic:* Scented with the same fragrance as Lush's Butterball Bath Bomb, this little cutie contains moisturising cocoa butter which helps to nourish and protect the skin.
Angels on Bare Skin:* A luxurious lavender and rose scented cleanser that leaves the skin feeling soft and hydrated. Angels on Bare Skin is one of Lush's best sellers.
Ponche Shower Gel:* A shower gel inspired by a citrus-y, tropical fruit punch with a hint of tequila to stimulate the senses.
Rose Jam Shower Gel:* The sweet, romantic scent of Rose is combined with the sharpness of lemon to create a staple shower gel in the Lush Christmas range.
Christmas Eve Bubble Bar: Crumble this under running water and the Jasmine and Ylang Ylang scented bubbles will help to calm the mind and help you drift off into the land of nod.
Pop in the Bath Bubble Bar: Scented with Bergamot, Lemon and Mandarin, this Mary Poppins inspired bubble bar helps relieve feelings of stress and worry.
Have you tried any of these? What's your favourite Lush product?
p.s. Keep and eye out for a Lush giveaway on my blog soon....
On Thursday, I was lucky enough to be invited by Lush to join a bunch of other New Zealand bloggers in an evening of pampering, fresh product making workshops and Furoshiki wrapping workshops at their Queen Street store. We were each given a goodie bag consisting of the stores new Christmas stock when we walked through the door and provided with snacks and drinks.
I must admit I was super nervous about this event, as it was the first time I had been to something like this. Also, being one of the younger girls there added to those nerves! For the first 10-ish minutes, we got the chance to wander around the store, mingling with other bloggers and trying out the products. I took ALOT of pictures (an excuse to hide my face a bit at the beginning) so I've picked a few of the best to share with you here. Then, one of the Lush girls, Amber talked to us about Lush's ethics, stating that Lush makes sure that all of their ingredient providers 100% do NOT test on animals. She also showed us some examples of how Lush recycles their packaging, such as the wrapping scarves, which are made of two black plastic bottles and the wrapping paper, which is made of recycled tee-shirts.
Next, the group was split into two and we were brought over to workshop stations. In the first workshop, we got to watch Angels on Bare Skin being made and we even got to take a pot of it home at the end. The next workshop consisted of learning how to wrap up gifts with scarves, as an alternative to paper. We also got to pick a scarf to keep. (I forgot to take a picture of mine, but you'll probably see it in a future post!)
As well as workshops, there was also a table where mini pamper sessions were being held. I had the Snow Fairy arm massage, which made me smell delicious and sparkle for the rest of the evening!)
To finish the evening, there were bath ballistic demos, where we learnt how to make bath cocktails, which I didn't even know was a thing!
All in all, I had a lovely night learning more about the Lush brand and trying out some of the new products. The staff were OUTSTANDING, and would come over to chat if you didn't have anyone to immediately talk to (ie: me! HA!) So, I don't know if any of the staff from Lush Queen Street will read this, but if they are, then thank you so much for putting on such a great evening for all of us!
Below is a video I made of the night...
I'll be doing a separate post about the contents of the Lush goodie bag, as well as a few of my own purchases.
